Representing the RI President at District 9126 DISCON 2026

On Friday, 8 May 2026, I had the honour of representing Rotary International President Francesco Arezzo as his Personal Representative at the official opening of the District 9126 Conference (DISCON) in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria.

The conference, held under the theme “Unite for Good: Collaborating for Impacts,” brought together Rotarians, government leaders, professionals, and community partners for three days of fellowship, dialogue, learning, and celebration.

“Rotary membership must go beyond paying dues and being a member in good standing. To be a true Rotarian in the club, one must care, serve, connect, inspire, and unite with others to create lasting change in communities.”

The Rotary International President’s message was a strong call for Rotarians to Unite for Good — by growing Rotary, bringing the Action Plan to life, engaging younger generations, strengthening clubs, and sustaining our commitment to ending polio forever.

I also emphasized that Rotary Clubs are not built by numbers alone. They are built by members whose voices matter, whose service matters, and whose commitment gives life to Rotary’s mission.

Key Achievements Celebrated at DISCON

  • A net membership growth of 89 members
  • All 70 Rotary Clubs in the District became giving clubs to The Rotary Foundation
  • Deployment of 70 Polio Awareness Billboards across the District
  • Strong collaboration with political leaders in advancing the fight against polio

I warmly congratulate District Governor Funkeakpo Ken Batife for his exemplary leadership and stewardship throughout the Rotary year.

Distinguished Voices at the Opening Ceremony

The official opening ceremony featured several notable speakers and dignitaries.

Hon. Barr. Olumuyiwa Sylvester Adu delivered the keynote address on “Collaborating for Impactful Service through Peace Building in Our Communities.”

Commandant Oluyemi Ibiloye Joshua of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps spoke about the importance of law enforcement and community partnerships in protecting critical infrastructure.

The conference was officially opened by HE Dr. Olusegun Rahman Mimiko, former Executive Governor of Ondo State and Special Guest of Honour.

The royal host, HRM Oba (Dr.) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, CFR — the Deji of Akure and Paramount Ruler of Akure Kingdom — delivered the goodwill message.

A Conference Full of Fellowship and Celebration

Beyond the formal sessions, the conference was filled with energy, culture, and fellowship.

Delegates enjoyed a lively programme that included:

  • The colourful Arrival Fish Night Party
  • The energetic Jeans & Karaoke Night
  • Sports and games activities
  • A vibrant Cultural Fiesta showcasing music, dance, heritage, and traditional attire from across the District
  • A grand Gala and Awards Night celebrating Rotary excellence and impactful service

The programme also featured discussions on Rotary visibility, tax reforms in Nigeria, Rotary Foundation giving, and the impact of contributions toward polio eradication.

District 9126 demonstrated that when Rotarians unite around purpose, service becomes more visible, more impactful, and more enduring. The spirit of fellowship, celebration, and commitment to service was evident throughout the conference.
