Vocational Services Report – Visit to the Rotary Cancer Facility at Nsambya

Date: 31st October 2025

The Visit

A delegation led by President Stella Alibateese visited the Rotary Cancer Facility at Nsambya Hospital, accompanied by Rotarians Fred Mukwanga, John Kaggwa, Samwiri Katunguka, Stephen Sendikaddiwa, Frank Sebbowa, Ronnie Mutebi, Tom Kajumba, Boniface Azairwe, Merab Tanirwa, Rhona Baingana, Sarah Bagalaliwo, Macleen Berunga, Roger Wamara (a visiting Rotarian from Kampala South) and three Rotaractors.

They were welcomed by Dr. Andrew Sekitoleko (CEO, Nsambya Hospital), Dr. Kalungi (Cancer Programs Officer), and Dr. Deo.
He briefed the team about the services being offered at the Cancer Clinic among which include Chemotherapy, Surgical Oncology and Treatment. It was also eye catching to note the depressing statistics about the death rate of Cancer patients being at 70% in a year and the 30% likely to succumb in the subsequent periods.

The CEO highlighted that there is no magic bullet about the causes of Cancer but noted the main indicator being subdued body immunity systems.
Members were also sensitized about the possible interventions to prevent Cancer infections and the notable proposals being focused leadership by the political authority, building Comprehensive Care Systems and decentralizing Cancer education and ancillary services.
Members were taken for a tour around the Rotary Cancer Testing Construction Project. Members were educated about the reasons why the bunker construction project had stalled for 2 years. The justification being the huge amount of resources (Not less than UGX 5Bn) required to complete the next stage that covers concrete walling and beaming stage. It was refreshing to note that project was soon to resume having received funds after the recent Cancer Run fundraiser.

Key Highlights

  • The Cancer Clinic offers Chemotherapy, Surgical Oncology, and Treatment Services.
  • The CEO shared that the annual mortality rate among cancer patients is 70%, with an additional 30% likely to succumb later.
  • There is no magic bullet for the causes of cancer; weakened body immunity remains a major contributor.
  • Interventions proposed include focused political leadership, comprehensive care systems, and decentralizing cancer education.

Project Insights

Members toured the Rotary Cancer Testing Construction Project and learned that construction had stalled for two years due to a funding gap. The next stage — concrete walling and beaming — requires UGX 5 billion.

Encouragingly, the project will soon resume construction after receiving proceeds from the recent Cancer Run fundraiser.

“There is no greater calling than serving humanity through health, hope, and compassion. Rotary’s footprint at Nsambya stands as a beacon of that spirit.”
— President Stella Alibateese
